How can I participate?
- Join the worldwide polar campaign
- Upload COI sequences, tracefiles, taxonomic assignments and collection details to the Barcode of Life Data System
- Send identified specimens for barcode analysis
- Collect fresh samples from polar regions
- Help to identify barcoded specimens
Benefits
- Campaign members can easily deposit and manage COI barcodes and other information for all specimens via the BOLD system
- The CCDB may provide free sample processing to participating members with limited funds or no access to sequencing facilities, provided that the contributed samples build new species coverage
- The CCDB can provide competitive sequencing charges to members with grants in place
- Barcoded specimens can be retained by the original collector so long as they are deposited in a museum collection following publication
- DNA aliquots can be shared with sample donors
- Easy publication of COI sequences to GenBank
- Utilization of analytical tools on BOLD
- Detailed specimen information is confidential to project participants and the campaign coordinator until published
- Campaign members may establish connections with members of other projects (upon mutual agreements) through the campaign coordinator
Responsibilities
- Campaign participants are expected to provide reliable species identifications
- Sample donors are responsible for providing detailed specimen information, e.g. taxonomy, collection information (collectors, collection date, GPS coordinates, etc.), sex, and life stage
- Sample donors must deposit barcoded specimens in a major collection upon completion of the project
- Sample donors are expected to re-examine species identity should discrepancies arise between morphological identification and COI results
